Rainy Day Catch-up

We have just returned from our walk downtown - for Brendan's daily coconut gelati and my fix of picture-taking.  Unfortunately only half of our goals were achieved.  Post-gelati we made our way to Parque Juarez  for Candelaria.  Imagine acres of green park and walkways now filled with potted flowers and plants.  Local gardeners set up shop filling their booths with wall to wall flowers - all in celebration of Candelaria.  What makes it so amazing is that all plants have been forced into bloom for this special week.  Rainbows of spring primroses alongside fully blooming amaryllis, fall blooming mums and summer daisies. It's a riot of colour and PACKED with people carrying home pots of blooms. As we walked down to the park, the skies became instantly dark and the thermometre began to plummet.  By the time we were walking amidst the crowds, thunder and rain hit and our new goal now became trying to find a taxi home.  We, and about a thousand other people in downtown San Miguel had the same plan.

Making your way uphill on the cobblestone sidewalks is difficult enough.  As one looks down trying to avoid slipping on wet stone and breaking an ankle on the 18" curbs, one forgets a new hazard.  The dreaded drainspout.  Gargoyles from rooftops were now spewing water off the roofs and we constantly were dumped on by these rude beasts.  As far as catching a cab, we made our way to the central Jardin where we and hundreds of our closest friends had the same thing in mind.  Every taxi in San Miguel was in use and we finally decided that we could get no colder nor wetter by simply walking home.

Needless to say, I'm happy as a wet clam as I now sit in our dry casa with a glass of wine and my laptop, bundled in a warm and dry sweater.  Also pretty thankful that Brendan took in the laundry on the line before we left the house today.

Since my camera is empty, save the one street shot above, I'll take the time to post some shots of what it's like here on a sunny day.

We live in Informatif de Allende, between the neighbourhoods of Guadalupe and Mexiquito.  It's a half hour walk downtown.

That's it for today.  We're going to puddle-jump our way to Gombo's pizza for supper tonight. Next installment will be the Blessing of the Poodles which took place a few weeks ago.  It deserves an entry unto itself.
